- The Outer Hebrides are also know as the Western Isles. The Isle of Lewis is joined to the Isle of Harris; the two islands commonly called the 'Long Island'. This may appear a little confusing especially when the Outer Hebrides are often referred to as simply 'the Hebrides' .The Inner Hebrides include the Isle of Skye and the surrounding islands.
The Hebrides were first mentioned by the Ancient Greeks c. 55 B.C. They are the setting for William Wordsworth’s ‘The Solitary Reaper’.
