- The nine of diamonds card is referred to as ‘The Curse of Scotland’.
This is because nine diamonds were at one time stolen from the crown of Scotland. A tax was levied on the people to replace them.
Or because it was the card used by Sir John Dalrymple as a signal to authorise the start of the massacre at Glencoe.
Or because the Duke of Cumberland chose this card to write his orders on after the Battle of Culloden, including the line ‘Give no quarter.’
- The Crinnan Canal runs between Ardrishaig and Crinnan. It is nine miles long and rises 64 ft. It opened in 1801.
-The Lewis chessmen which were found in 1830, hidden on the island in sand dunes. They are made of walrus ivory and date from the 12th century. 67 of the chesspieces were acquired by the British Museum in London and 11 pieces were acquired by the Museum of Scotland.
